Don’t teach right from wrong ..

The government are still trying to work out why we have the highest teenage pregnancy rate in the whole of Europe.   Fact is our youth have no idea what is right and wrong … and the leaders of our country think THIS is a good idea ….

It cautions: “Discussing your values with your teenagers will help them to form their own.

“Remember though, that trying to convince them of what’s right and wrong may discourage them from being open.”

Oh yeah right, Dan is only 4.5 right but we spend most of our time trying to help him understand right from wrong, and further from that, be able to decide for himself what is right form wrong.  We have to employ all the parting know how we have,  naughty steps and (don’t tell the lawyers) smacking.  We also use the Bible a lot.  Every night we read a story with him, and discuss it with him, and try to ally it to the day we have just had.   Dan fully understands there are absolute writes and wrongs.. he just isn’t always quick enough to think it through for himself!

Dan’s school in the paper

Every now and again, I feel little stingy old scrouge.   Thre are SOO many good casues out there, and you can’t give money to them all.   Dan’s school had a harvest campaign … raisign soem money to Africa, send a few coppers .. it made the local paper ..

CHILDREN at two south Bucks schools put a twist on their traditional harvest festivals by raising money for charity and donating cash to a school.

I’m quite proud of his wee school, there are only like 45 pupils ..

the company is seeds for africa.

New Blog update

Well it has been a while since I posted, mostly becuase my allocated posting time has been spent redeveloping the blog.

Ali got back to school and soon as she started, she was off on a biology field trip.  Somewehre in north-ish Wales at a very well equipped, well run school research site.

Dan is still enjoying school, we aren’t too sure what he gets up to most days, he isn’t very keen to talk about it when he gets home.  The most we get is ” I had fruit at break time”   or ” we looked at shapes”  any more info is sparce!

I had had a somewhat sureal month.  Post Soul Survivor has been an intersting time.  My job has changed quite a bit.  I am no longer responsible fro 13 – 25’s, the 18+ group connect has been moved from under me.  The process was quite painful adn frustrating and led to near resignation, near depression.  Fortunately God is totally amazing and despite some bad processing some great thigns have come of it.   For starters, my need to recognise my focus has been too much on who I am in my job rather than who I am in Christ.   Explained why i got frustrated when my job changed without me knowing it was going to.  Good thing to be able to re-focus ones life aiming more at God!!

So that left me with half a job that I have spent a coupel years training someone else to do!   Not so great for my career path or motivation, give the above need for re-focussing.  so after a few hard conversations, I have picked up a coupel other interesting assignments.  As well as helping Steve run WYnet, I shall be heading a project team (that i first need to recruit) to re-design and launch the Wycliffe UK prayer strategy.    I’ve also been asked to help the Executive Director do some research and develop a strategy to recruit some new trustees who are under 40.

Quite exciting, quite scarey all at the same time.  Would appriciate any prayers you can offer!!

Proud Daddy

Well a new term started, Ali back to school and slightly more scary is Dan starting school. There he is in his uniform, happens to be the very same uniform I wore when I started at that school 23 years ago!

I am also very proud of his grasp of complex theology. I know he is only 4, as far as we can tell he hasn’t understood enough about life sin and Jesus to make a commitment to him yet BUT, as i was putting him to bed tonight something quite profound happened. Every night we share things that have made us happy and sad and then we pray about them. Today’s sad thing was all the rain which meant we couldn’t play outside. So I prayer for some sunshine tomorrow. As soon as we stopped praying, he looked at me and said

“God made the rain and the sun, he can do anything”

As if that wasn’t enough, he then went on to explain that there are three bits but 1 God.

“A mummy and daddy and the holy spirit. “

I said ‘close!’,
Dan said

“oh yeah, sorry, Father, Jesus and the holy spirit. but they all make God.”

Okay so some of you reading would point out there are fine details of 1+1+1=1 but he is 4. I haven’t ever explained it to him! Maybe it was vegetales?

new oppertunities

So Ali and i finally met some of our neighbours! Sad isn’t it, our lives are so busy, and being introverts we have lived in our house for 20 months and we only met 3 out of our 13 sort of neighbours. We were out finally doing some gardening, Dan was out playing on his push car thing and he ran up the road to make some new friends. Next thing, parent number 1(whose name we haven’t as yet gotten out of her) popped round to check ti was okay for Dan to join the rest of the kids in their garden. COOL! 4 minutes later Dan re-appeared with a new Friend also called Dan, about the same age, and ran into our garden. Parent 1 quickly appears checking if we have both Dans. Awesome. The boys run off again and then Tracey who is the other Dan’s mum appears and we chat. Ahh i love the summer sun. (Dan runs back to get his swim trunks. sprinkler in use!) Sooo maybe in the next few months we will be able to chat some more to these folks and get to know them some more!
